Journey Time and Distance
The sea voyage between Eminönü and Üsküdar covers a distance of approximately 2.0 kilometers, and this pleasant trip takes an average of 15 minutes. During these brief 15 minutes, you have the opportunity to witness one of the most beautiful views in the world. As the ferry departs from Eminönü, you leave behind the magnificent silhouettes of the Süleymaniye Mosque, the New Mosque, and the Galata Tower. Gliding through the cool waters of the Bosphorus, the historical textures of Topkapı Palace and Hagia Sophia will dazzle you. As you approach Üsküdar, the Maiden's Tower, one of Istanbul's iconic symbols, welcomes you in all its elegance. While sea conditions are generally calm, slight swells may occur, especially on days with strong southwesterly winds (lodos); however, Şehir Hatları ferries are highly durable and safe against such weather conditions.
Ferry Schedules
Because the Eminönü - Üsküdar line is one of Istanbul's busiest maritime routes, ferry departures are highly frequent. Services begin in the early hours of the morning and continue uninterrupted until midnight. The frequency peaks particularly during the morning and evening rush hours; during these times, ferries operate almost like shared taxis, with one docking as soon as another departs. In the middle of the day and on weekends, departures run at regular, scheduled intervals. Although there may be minor changes between summer and winter timetables, you can generally board the next ferry easily without waiting long at the pier. Night services (owl services) may be extended until certain hours on weekends.
Ticket Prices and Reservations
Since this route is entirely an urban public transportation line, ticket pricing is based on the standard city transit tariff set by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality. Passengers pass through the turnstiles at the piers by scanning their Istanbulkart. Different fare types apply, such as full, student, teacher, and social cards. Transfer discounts are also valid on this line, allowing passengers who board the ferry after getting off the metro or tram to travel at a discounted rate. Because the Eminönü - Üsküdar line is strictly a passenger route, there are no vehicle tickets sold. Furthermore, there is no requirement to buy online tickets in advance or make a reservation for this line; you can simply go straight to the pier, scan your card, and board the ferry. Istanbulkart top-up machines (Biletmatik) are available at the pier entrances.
Getting to the Piers
Both the Eminönü and Üsküdar piers are major transportation hubs on their respective sides of the city. To reach Eminönü Pier, you can use the Kabataş-Bağcılar Tram Line (T1) and get off at the Eminönü stop. It is also possible to reach the Eminönü bus platforms via IETT buses departing from all over Istanbul. The Sirkeci Marmaray station is just a few minutes' walk from the pier. Since finding parking around Eminönü is quite difficult and costly, public transportation should be preferred. Our destination, Üsküdar Pier, is at least as rich in transportation options as Eminönü. As soon as you exit the pier, you can easily access the Marmaray station, the Üsküdar-Çekmeköy Metro Line (M5), and bus and minibus stops heading to many points on the Asian Side. Although there are paid parking areas along the Üsküdar coastline and its surroundings, their capacities are limited.
Traveling with a Vehicle
The Eminönü - Üsküdar Şehir Hatları ferry route serves foot passengers only. Cars, motorcycles, or commercial vehicles are not allowed on these ferries. Boarding is only permitted with non-motorized and personal vehicles such as bicycles, foldable scooters, and baby strollers (subject to certain rules). Drivers wishing to cross from the European Side to the Asian Side with their vehicles can opt for the Harem - Sirkeci car ferries departing from Sirkeci Pier, located very close to Eminönü. Alternatively, the Eurasia Tunnel, the 15 July Martyrs Bridge, or the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge can be used for intercontinental crossings by car. If you are traveling on foot, there is no check-in procedure to board the ferry; simply pass through the turnstile and step aboard.
