Samos (Sisam), Pythagorion — Yunanistan Adaları · 4 active ferry routes
A tourist port located in the south of Samos Island, next to the UNESCO World Heritage ancient city of Pythagorion. It is the main entry point for Kuşadası-Samos ferry services during the summer months, in close proximity to the Tunnel of Eupalinos and the Temple of Hera (Heraion).
Located on the southern coast of Samos Island, Samos (Pythagorion) Port is one of the most important maritime gateways of the Aegean Sea, boasting both historical charm and tourist appeal. Named after the famous mathematician and philosopher Pythagoras, this picturesque port town is situated directly in the heart of a UNESCO World Heritage site. Serving as a primary entry point, especially for tourists arriving from Turkey during the summer months, Pythagorion welcomes visitors with its ancient harbor walls, a pedestrian-friendly promenade closed to traffic, boutique hotels, and cafes stretching along the coastline.
Passengers traveling to Samos Island by sea have two main alternatives: Vathy Port in the north, which is the island's capital, and the tourist-oriented Pythagorion Port in the south. Pythagorion is a modern border gate equipped with customs and passport control infrastructure, heavily used by catamarans and fast ferries departing from Kuşadası, particularly during the summer season. From the moment you step into the port, you can feel the atmosphere of a modern holiday resort intertwined with the engineering marvels of antiquity.
Pythagorion Port is located in the southeast of the island at coordinates 37.6900°N latitude and 26.9420°E longitude. Situated very close to the Turkish coast, the port is approximately 22 kilometers from Kuşadası. The Strait of Mycale, the narrowest point between Turkey and Samos, is only 1.6 kilometers wide. This geographical proximity makes maritime transport between the two shores extremely practical.
The area surrounding the port is designed entirely as a pedestrian zone. This allows passengers disembarking from the ship to reach the town center, restaurants, and car rental offices directly without experiencing the stress of vehicle traffic. The ferry docking piers are just a few steps' walk from the customs building. While the historical Logothetis Tower rises at the western end of the port, the eastern end features a marina area where small fishing boats and luxury yachts are moored.
Pythagorion Port hosts heavy maritime traffic, especially between Turkey and Greece. The main departure point for ferry services to this port is the Kuşadası Ege Port passenger terminal. The journey on the Kuşadası–Pythagorion route takes approximately 60 minutes. (For comparison, Kuşadası–Vathy services take 30-40 minutes).
The main operators serving the route are Meander Travel and Tilos Travel. While Meander Travel uses Pythagorion as its main entry point during the summer season with its modern catamarans named "Kuşadası Express" and "Meander Express", Tilos Travel operates services with its vessel "Sea Star Rhodes".
According to the latest Kuşadası–Samos Ferry Guide 2026 data, ticket prices are as follows: Adult one-way tickets are €37-€39 (approximately 1,480-1,560 TL), same-day round-trip tickets are €47 (approximately 1,880 TL), and different-day round-trip tickets are around €59 (approximately 2,360 TL). Tickets for children aged 2-11 are €27-€29, while only a €5-€10 tax/fee is charged for infants aged 0-2.
Once you reach Pythagorion Port, transferring to other parts of the island is quite easy. The port is only 3 kilometers away from Samos International Airport (Aristarchos of Samos). This makes Pythagorion a central hub for tourists arriving on the island by air as well.
At the port exit, there are KTEL bus stops heading to other popular tourist areas of the island, such as Vathy (Samos Town), Kokkari, and Karlovasi. Additionally, there is a 24/7 taxi stand right outside the customs building. For those who want to explore the island on their own route, many local and international car, motorcycle, and ATV rental agencies operate along the Pythagorion promenade. Since the vast majority of ferry services only accept foot passengers (special confirmation must be obtained from the companies for vehicle crossings), arriving on the island without a vehicle and renting one from the port area is the most preferred method.
Rather than a massive cruise terminal, Pythagorion Port features a boutique passenger lounge that harmonizes with the historical texture. The customs and passport control building is air-conditioned and has waiting areas. Since the area around the port is closed to traffic, there are no large parking lots right in front of the terminal building; the moment passengers exit customs, they step directly onto the promenade where cafes, restaurants, and souvenir shops are located.
Luggage Rules: On ferry journeys, each passenger is entitled to carry 1 standard-size suitcase and 1 additional handbag. Some tourism agencies around the port can offer short-term luggage storage services for day-trippers.
Free Wi-Fi spots, ATMs, and currency exchange offices are available in the port area. However, as is the case throughout the Greek Islands, it will be useful to keep some cash in Euros with you for your expenses at small businesses.
The biggest advantage of Pythagorion Port is that it is within walking distance or a very short drive to the island's most important historical and tourist spots. You can even see the ruins of the ancient harbor walls as you approach the port.
Samos Pythagorion Port is an international border gate. Therefore, all passengers entering the island via ferries departing from Turkey must pass through passport and visa controls. You must have a passport valid for at least 6 months from your travel date.
Samos Island is included in the "Gate Visa" program applied for Turkish citizens. With this visa, obtained by applying with documents such as a biometric photograph, round-trip ferry ticket, hotel reservation, and current bank statement, you can stay on the island for up to 15 days. For gate visa procedures, the documents must be submitted to the ferry company a few days before travel. For detailed information and the current list of documents, you can review our Passport and Visa Guide page.
