Efforts to launch direct ferry services between Bodrum and the Greek island of Astypalaia have accelerated. This new route, proposed by a Turkish shipping company, aims to commence service in the summer season of 2027. According to plans, services will operate 2 to 3 times a week between June and September 2027, will take approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes, and connect two popular destinations.
Details and Objectives of the New Ferry Line
According to news from Tornos News, the Astypalaia Municipal Council unanimously supported the proposal to establish a ferry connection between Bodrum and the island. This development has the potential to expand the transportation network in the Aegean Sea and boost tourism. In addition to existing popular routes like Bodrum - Kos, Astypalaia is expected to become a new option for Turkish holidaymakers.
According to the proposed plan, for this new route, offered by an operator such as Bodrum Ferryboat, the use of a catamaran named TAYYAR TUGAY with a capacity of 460 passengers has been proposed. The estimated journey time is projected to be 1 hour and 40 minutes. Services are planned to operate 2 to 3 times a week between June and September 2027.
Port Infrastructure and Visa Facilitation on the Agenda
For the new route to become operational, it is crucial that Astypalaia Port is made suitable for international passenger traffic. In this context, obtaining the necessary permits, completing infrastructure work, and expediting inspection processes are anticipated. Preparations are aimed to be completed by the end of May 2027, with the first services targeted to commence in early June 2027.
Furthermore, with this new ferry line, the inclusion of Astypalaia in the Visa Express (Port Visa) program for Turkish citizens has also been brought up. The Municipality of Astypalaia requested that the possibility of including the island in the program be explored, should this application continue in 2027. This could further facilitate Turkish citizens' travel to the Greek islands.
Important Information for Passengers
Whether the planned ferry services will definitively commence will become clear after the completion of preparations and the necessary permits in the upcoming period. Passengers are advised to follow official announcements from the relevant shipping companies and authorities for up-to-date information on schedules, ticket prices, and visa requirements before making their travel plans. Purchasing travel insurance for international ferry journeys can also provide significant security against unexpected situations.
