The Ministry of Public Works and Transport of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) has announced the suspension of all Filo Denizcilik ferry services until further notice. Following this significant decision, Akgünler Denizcilik has been announced to commence ferry services between Turkey and the TRNC starting from September 1, 2026. Why Were Filo Denizcilik Services Suspended?
The Ministry's decision came after a tragic maritime accident that occurred yesterday afternoon. The high-speed passenger sea bus named "Filo Jet", operating between Kyrenia Port in the TRNC and Taşucu Port in Mersin, began taking on water from its bow shortly after departing Kyrenia and capsized while attempting to return to port.
In the accident, out of a total of 267 people on board, including 259 passengers and 8 crew members, 241 were rescued. Sadly, 8 people lost their lives, and search and rescue efforts for the remaining 18 individuals are ongoing.
